There is no definitive answer to the question of do squirrels eat corn, but many of us try to attract them by planting a few stalks in our yard. But this is not as easy as it sounds. The answer is a little more complicated than simply placing a few ears on the ground and hoping they’ll eat some. The most popular choice for backyard gardeners is dried corn. Squirrels also enjoy eating the kernel and silk of corn, but they’re unlikely to eat the kernel or husk. They’re likely to eat the embryonic part of the kernel, as this is what grows from seed to mature plant.
Getting Corn For Squirrels
You can also buy dried corn at your local farm supply store, but you’ll need to buy it in bulk. When compared to a whole, fresh kernel, corn is relatively inexpensive. Just be sure to make sure your squirrel doesn’t eat the husk or cob. The kernel contains a moderate concentration of protein and lipids, which your squirrels will use to grow. In addition, they are often attracted to the same plants as chickens and other birds. So, while they can eat corn, they should be fed a variety of foods.
Although squirrels can eat corn occasionally, they prefer nuts. The kernel of corn is a nutrient-dense part of the plant. They also eat the starch-laden bran. If you don’t feed your squirrels a variety of healthy foods, they will eventually stop eating them. And if they’re not eating your corn, you can offer them something that will satisfy their hunger.
