The Haunting of Bly Manor
The Haunting of Bly Manor is a sequel to the classic novel The Haunting of Hill House, and it isn’t nearly as scary. While it deals with a house haunted by ghosts and the terrible grief it causes its inhabitants, the film is much more of a narrative puzzle box. The film isn’t as chilling as its predecessor, but it’s still a fun watch.
The story begins with the reveal that the caretaker Mrs. Grose has died. Then, the audience is thrown into the mystery. Throughout the film, we learn that the caretaker was murdered. The movie also gives us the first glimpse of the ghostly character of Rebecca Jessel, played by Tahirah Sharif. She’s a young single teacher, but you can’t tell why she wants to work in the middle of nowhere.
Odd Thomas
Those looking for a different kind of horror movie will find it in Odd Thomas. Based on the gripping Dean Koontz novel series, this film stars the late Anton Yelchin as Odd Thomas, a man who has extraordinary abilities that allow him to see the dead. While working as a fry cook by day, Odd leads a double life as a detective for the dead at night. He must uncover a cold-blooded killer who has harmed several people.
The movie takes place in a rural area, where thousands of Bodachs live. The creatures are often shot and then disappear, but it’s Odd’s innate psychic powers that help him find the killer and put them to rest. His dreams are connected to his abilities, as he can see ghosts and see future events. Using his psychic abilities, Odd is able to warn others of impending danger.
The Taking of Deborah Logan
If you’re looking for a good horror film, there are a few you might want to watch. This 2014 found footage film stars Michelle Ang, Jill Larson, and Anne Ramsay and tells the tale of a documentary crew that starts a film about Alzheimer’s patients, but soon becomes obsessed with the patient. It’s a very strange subject matter for a horror movie, but one that will likely satisfy the horror fan in you.
The Taking of Deborah Logan is a psychological thriller that has a lot of lingering repercussions for its characters. As the story continues, Deborah Logan begins to show signs of dementia, and becomes a demonic host. This takes away from the movie’s otherwise somber tone, as it seems to imply that people with Alzheimer’s disease are prone to violent outbursts. Unfortunately, the filmmakers take a lot of time explaining what is going on, and the film comes across as overly-detailed and offensive.

After the spooky Shudder original, “The Host” is finally ready for the big screen. While this black-and-white horror film features man-eating squirrels, the ending has some ambiguity, leaving us guessing. To get an idea of what to expect, we spoke with Savage about the film.
