A squirrel’s corpse can show many different signs. It may be dehydrated, poisoned, or have contracted squirrelpox. If a squirrel is not dead, but its body is stiff, it could be dead from other causes, such as rat poison or squirrelpox. Read on to learn the symptoms of each of these conditions. Often, the symptoms of death can be difficult to spot, but there are some common warning signs to look for.

Symptoms of dehydration
If your pet squirrel is not responding to food, it could be dehydrated. If you suspect dehydration, you should check its temperature to ensure that it is over 98 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too low, you should administer rehydration fluids to replace the lost fluids. Most dehydrated squirrels are fed warm Pedialyte through a needleless syringe.
Dehydration in baby squirrels is very serious, and can even lead to pneumonia if the formula is ingested. It is important to immediately administer water to them, as they will be unable to digest food if it is severely dehydrated. To determine if the squirrel is dehydrated, test the animal’s skin turgor by gently lifting its skin on the back.
Squirrels can be difficult to diagnose when they are in shock, but you can start by offering warmth, darkness, quiet, and a suitable place to sleep. If you can’t find a vet immediately, you can try Bach’s Rescue Remedy and wait for a day or two until a professional veterinarian arrives. If you’re unable to reach the animal within a day, take it to a veterinary clinic immediately to make sure it doesn’t have any complications.
Symptoms of poisoning
Although there are no immediate symptoms, a squirrel can suffer from the effects of a poisoning. A veterinary treatment will include administering a ZANTEC tablet. If the animal does not exhibit the symptoms of poisoning, the rodent will move about looking for comfort. It will also show signs of diarrhoea and severe anemia. A strychnine poisoning is more dangerous, as the rodent can show clinical signs within two hours of consumption. Severe hemorrhage, nervousness, and anxiety are also signs of a poisoning. It may also require a hospitalization for 24 hours.
Despite the signs of poisoning in squirrels, it is not common for a rat or squirrel to die outdoors. Most people use poisoned bait to control rodents, but this method is inhumane. It can lead to death, leaving a rat carcass that is unsightly and smelly in the home. If you’re concerned about the behavior of your squirrel, call your local IDNR district wildlife biologist and get him to take a look at your situation.
Symptoms of rat poison
In a recent case in Staunton, a homeowner found a female squirrel in her driveway. The homeowner had recently put out rat poison stations in an attempt to control the local rodent population. On admitting the animal to the clinic, Dr. Ernesto noticed that it was depressed and showing signs of seizing. The animal is suffering from a poisoning caused by difethialone, a poison that is stored in the liver.
Typically, the poison is made to attract rats, but it can also kill squirrels. It is a combination of anticoagulants and rat poison, which prevents blood clotting and will eventually kill the rodent. It can be deadly to humans who ingest rat poison, so be very careful when deciding which type to use. For the best results, use rat poison on squirrels only when you’re sure that the rat in question isn’t hiding from you.
Symptoms of squirrelpox
Infected red squirrels show symptoms of squirrelpox, which include skin ulcers, scabs, and swelling near the eyes and feet. They may also become lethargic and stay around feeders longer than usual. A comparison between healthy and infected red squirrels will make the disease more apparent. Some animals are completely asymptomatic; others may show signs of the disease, such as lesions on the face and swelling in the mouth and eyes.
The first confirmed case of squirrelpox in Scotland was found in May 2007 in a Red. In the UK, SQPV has caused several outbreaks in multiple parts of the country. Until 2011, Ireland was uninfected. Two Red squirrels were found dead in Tollymore Forest Park, County Down, during March 2011. Until this point, SQPV had been thought absent in Europe, but in 2010 a new strain was isolated from a juvenile Red squirrel in northern Spain. Elena Obon and colleagues described lesions on the tail and ear tips of affected squirrels.
How can you tell if a squirrel is dead?
Answer: If a squirrel is lying on its side or back and not moving it is probably dead.
Another way to tell is if the squirrel’s eyes are open and not blinking.
