Andrews and colleagues conducted a study using heart tissue from thirteen-lined ground squirrels. Using large-scale RNA sequencing, the researchers determined the amount of different genes expressed in the heart tissue of ground squirrels.
Because of their body temperature and metabolism, ground squirrels experience a drastically lowered rate of activity during hibernation. Their heart rate slows to 5-6 beats per minute, and their body temperature falls to almost zero. It may take hours before a ground squirrel reactivates. This is one of the reasons why squirrels’ heart rate and respiration rate slow. If humans had this same experience, they would surely suffer from low oxygen levels and have a stroke.
