The lifespan of a squirrel depends on the species. Red, grey, and fox squirrels can live for up to ten years and females can live for up to twenty. Most species of the species can survive in captivity for several years, while some can live for just a few weeks. Read on to learn more about the life expectancy of your favorite animal.
Squirrels Lifespan
The lifespan of a grey squirrel in captivity is approximately eleven to twelve months, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. However, some animals have lived for over ten years free-roaming, making captive animals an excellent choice for pet owners. A female grey squirrel in a captive environment has been documented to outlive the average lifespan of the species. These figures are indicative of the care the animal receives while being in captivity.

Unlike the wild, captive-born squirrels tend to live longer than those that remain in the wild. This is because of the fact that captivity-born animals have less stress than their wild counterparts. In addition to providing a high-quality diet, captivity-born squirrels also benefit from comfortable housing and a low-stress environment. While most captivity-born squirrels are born with a female counterpart, males tend to live longer than their female counterparts.
