Preserving a pliable squirrel pelt
When you find a pliable squirrel pelt, the next step is to separate the tailbone. If the animal is large, splitting the tailbone can be difficult. Make sure to separate the skin from the muscles, bones, and skin without snapping the animal. Afterward, you will need to clean the hide and dry it thoroughly. To do this, first cut away the silver skin around the ears and eyes.
To skin a squirrel, you should first cut the pelt along the fur side of the body, starting from the base of the tail and working your way up to the groin. Then, carefully peel away the hide around the genitals and cut along the tail. This can be tricky, so proceed with caution. Cut off any loose tissue and rinse off the pelt with water.
Curing a squirrel pelt
To ensure your pelt will last for years, you can make it soft and smooth by salting it first. However, be sure to cover all edges and folds, head and tail. Then, simply soak the pelt for a day in the mixture. After the day, dry it thoroughly and clean it with mild detergent. For a long-lasting result, you can also treat it with Neatsfoot oil, a cow shin extract.
The first step in curing a squirrel pelt is to clean it thoroughly. To do so, remove any traces of hair. To make the skin more receptive to brains, sand the pelt with sandpaper. After this, leave the pelt in the salt solution for two or three days. Once it has cured for long periods, it’s ready to be used.
Shipping a pelt
When shipping a cured squirrel pelt, the first step is to carefully and thoroughly wash and dry the pelt before putting it on a stretcher. Be sure not to wrap it too tightly or too loosely, and turn it over several times. This will prevent the flesh from becoming brittle and dry. Once it is clean and dry, place the pelt on a cardboard box with adequate ventilation. A burlap bag can be used to help protect the pelt while in transit.
The first step is to wash and dry the pelt thoroughly, keeping it away from flies and heat. Do not store it in plastic bags, as these can heat the pelt. While shipping a pelt, be sure to include your full name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. You can also add a few drops of Neatsfoot oil, a product made from cow shin extract, if you wish to make the pelt pliable.
Keeping a pelt pliable
After curing a squirrel pelt, you should prepare it for use. Using denatured alcohol will help preserve the fur. You can use half denatured alcohol and half water to moisten the pelt. Soak it for a day, then wash and dry it thoroughly. To make the pelt pliable, you can purchase Neatsfoot oil from a shoe cobbler.
After curing your pelt, you can begin to work it back into shape. For this purpose, you need to start by pulling the pelt in different directions to break the leather fibers. Once you notice that the pelt is turning brown, you can begin pulling sections of the skin. Once you have tanned the pelt, you can now begin the next step.
Removing a squirrel’s organs
Besides being aesthetically pleasing, removing a carcass’ organs will ensure that the pelt will last longer. The hide can be used for rawhide. Store it in a sack, which keeps it safe from dogs. The brains, on the other hand, can be used to make skull collection or stuffed into a plastic container.
