If you’ve ever wondered how many breths a squirrel takes in a minute, you are not alone. Squirrels, like humans, breathe about 55 breths per minute. That’s less than 1% of the rate humans breathe! Humans breathe approximately 100 breths per minute. But a squirrel’s rate of breathing is slightly higher than yours!

Ground squirrels breathe 55 +/- 1.9 (SE) breths per minute
The 13-lined ground squirrel reaches a lowered respiratory rate when it enters hibernation, which varies in amplitude and duration. At this low respiratory rate, it often experiences apnea or multiple breath episodes. Breathing amplitude and rate increases during arousal. In hyperventilation, however, the rate and duration are similar to those in wakefulness.
The total respiratory rate was measured from a single ground squirrel at two temperatures. The temperature of the animals was changed from four to seven degrees Celsius. The animals did not respond to hypoxia or to hypercapnia, but both exhibited significant breathing responses when exposed to varying levels of CO2. The carotid body denervation had little impact on the intensity of either respiratory response, while reducing the threshold and magnitude of the hypoxic ventilatory response.
These measurements are consistent with those of the tortoises, which can live for 150 years. The respiratory rate of the animals studied increased from 55 +/ 1.9 (SE) breths per minute during transport to ninety-six breaths per minute within ten minutes of release. During the winter, squirrels do not hibernate, but instead tend to stay in nests or dens.
Humans breathe 100 times a minute
The breathing process in humans is composed of repeated cycles of inhalation and exhalation. The air passes through a complex system of tubes, from the nose to alveoli. The rate at which people breathe is the number of cycles they perform in a minute. It is one of four primary signs of life. It also contributes to the tight control of the pH level of extracellular fluids. A person’s breathing rate depends on several factors.
According to Johns Hopkins, the respiratory rate is the number of breaths an individual takes per minute. To measure this rate, you need to observe a person’s chest rise and fall and count how many breaths they take. One complete breath is composed of an inhalation and an exhalation. The respiratory center responds to this signal by counting how many breaths a person takes. The brain’s signals help the respiratory muscles coordinate each other to make each breath.
Squirrels breathe 55 +/- 1.9 (SE) breths per minute
A squirrel’s respiratory system is similar to human’s: they breathe into two lungs and then pass the air through their gills and nose before entering their bloodstream. This process helps them get the oxygen they need to renew their cells. Unlike humans, they cannot breathe underwater and can die if they hold their breath for too long. However, a squirrel’s breathing rate is higher than yours.
The rate of respiration in a squirrel’s body is higher when it engages in aerobic activity. The increased amount of oxygen and nutrients to its tissues increases its respiratory rate. This increased respiratory rate makes the animal breath faster. A squirrel can hold its breath for only a few seconds before its heartbeat increases and it becomes immobile. It will then freeze and give a fixed stare.
The apnea and hibernation state of a 13-lined ground squirrel are variable and cause the heart rate to rise and fall dramatically. A squirrel’s heart rate starts out slow and increases in amplitude as it arouses from a hibernation state. After waking, it then begins breathing shallowly rhythmic breaths that increase in rate and amplitude until hyperventilation occurs.
