California ground squirrel

The scientific name for the Brazilian squirrel is Sciurusaestuans ingrami. Its karyotype consists of 18 pairs of biarmed autosomes with a small, acrocentric X and Y in the interstitial regions. This squirrel also has four pairs of nucleolar organizer regions, or NORs, which are easily identifiable using silver-staining. The study also uses fluorescent in situ hybridization to determine if multiple NORs are present in the karyotype of the Brazilian squirrel.
Although the Brazilian squirrel is common in the U.S., its habitat is fragmented. Many populations have gone extinct because of ecosystem change, and some populations have become extinct. In fact, some populations have been completely lost in recent years due to habitat transformation. Because of this, the species is currently listed as a Species of Least Concern (SLC) but could fall into this category in the future.
