How to Help a Squirrel in the Winter
If you’ve seen a baby squirrel, you’re probably wondering how to help it survive the winter. Luckily, there are several steps you can take. First, make sure the baby squirrel is safe. Provide food and shelter, and be sure to leave your human scent behind. Second, release it from its cage. The FWC has general emergency instructions for situations like this. Here are some of these scenarios:
Food
While it may seem like squirrels are nocturnal and can survive on nearly anything, the truth is that squirrels aren’t exactly your best friends in the winter. If you are looking for ways to make squirrels more comfortable in your home, here are a few tips:
First of all, feeding squirrels during the winter can have negative effects. This is because squirrels go through a gestation period during the winter. This time of year means that female squirrels need a large amount of food in order to grow healthy offspring. In addition to their diet, they need to store food for their babies. So, if you want to avoid any unwanted ramifications, do not feed them!
Shelter
Squirrels need shelter during the winter months because of the low food supply. As a result, they start preparing for winter by building food caches underground, which can include nuts, seeds, and fruit. Their methods of caching vary, as they don’t remember where all of their food storage units are located. Many squirrels work together to build communal hoards. They also forage for insects, bird eggs, mushrooms, and animal bones.
Squirrels are often attracted to unchecked areas of buildings. Attics and air ducts are prime locations for winter squirrels. They will enter through aluminum venting and loose flashing. They will then collect nesting materials and build a new home. They can also use garbage cans to store food. If you find a squirrel in your attic, try to remove the source of heat and provide shelter from the elements.
Drinks
In the wild, squirrels can drink water, but they have to find their own way to do it. They will look for a location free from predators and then lower their heads into the water. They will then splash around in it just like a cat, but they do not have the same immune system as humans. So, drinking water is an important part of winter survival for them. But how do you keep the water fresh?
A solution to this problem is to keep a birdbath filled with water for squirrels. Researchers found that squirrels will drink water if it’s available at a higher concentration than normal. However, a low-serum concentration makes squirrels less likely to drink, so the water is not readily available to them. The water they drink is then stored in their holes during the winter. This prevents them from waking up when they’re thirsty and consuming more water.
Releasing a squirrel from a cage
Releasing a squirrel from a wintertime cage requires special care. The squirrel needs to be fed and hydrated before being released, and it should be allowed to enter and exit the cage of its own accord. If possible, release the squirrel on its own, and do not leave it in the cage for long. Several major rescue groups use this method to reduce the chances of recapturing the animal.
The first step in re-releasing a squirrel is to secure the box with a breathable block. You can use hardware mesh, or tie a bungee cord. Remember, wild squirrels are not supposed to be trapped and released in a small box for more than an hour. They should always have access to air. If you cannot do this, you should avoid releasing the squirrel from a winter cage.
Protecting a squirrel from hawks
There are many different methods you can use to protect a squirrel from a hawk. Red-tailed hawks are one type of aerial predator that is common in winter. They hunt small mammals and usually fall from a tree branch to catch their prey. Other mammals and birds will also prey on squirrels, including Franklin’s ground squirrels and northern flying foxes. Regardless of which species of squirrels you have, you need to protect them from these predators.
One of the most effective methods for preventing hawk attacks is to use deterrents. Large owl statues and scarecrows can fool the hawk into thinking a smaller animal is threatening its prey. Other deterrents include bird feeders placed within 10 feet of natural cover. These feeders should be in a protected area. Using a canopy or covered platform feeder will provide visual shielding for the small animal when a hawk is circling.
