How to Make a Mother Squirrel Move Her Nest
If you want to encourage a mother squirrel to move her nest, the first thing you need to do is discourage her from bringing her young back to the same tree. She may have no other choice but to take them back if you disturb her nest. But don’t give up – there are other ways to make a mother squirrel move her nest. For instance, if you cut a tree and discover a squirrel’s nest, you can try placing a nest box.
Find a nest for a baby squirrel
It is impossible to make a mother squirrel move her nest, but there are some steps you can take to help her. First, find the nest during midday and gently tamper with it. You can use a radio to attract her attention and toss some soaked rags into the nest, or you can place a radio 6 feet from the nest. Make sure to leave a few hours between the radio play and the baby squirrel’s arrival.
Second, try feeding the baby squirrel. While the baby squirrels cannot poo or pee yet, they need to be stimulated and given warm water. To stimulate the baby, the mother uses her tongue. Once it is fed, the baby squirrel will start climbing your legs to explore your body. You should wait at least two to three weeks before approaching it to avoid scaring it away.
Discourage a mother squirrel from taking her young back
One of the easiest ways to dissuade a mother squirrel from taking her young back is to make loud noises. If you can, bang the rafters loudly and talk loudly. You can also leave a warm sock or a rag soaked in apple cider vinegar in the attic. Regardless of the method, avoid feeding the young squirrel because it will be too uncomfortable for it.
Another effective way to scare the mother squirrel is to play music. Human voices scare the mother squirrel. The sound should be loud, but not shrill. The sound should be loud enough to frighten the mother squirrel. The noise should last for at least three days. You also need to be persistent in this method. If it doesn’t work, call the Wildlife Helpline. They can assist you with the right methods.
Place a nest box after tree cutting
You can place a nest box in the base of the tree that has been cut, or on a nearby tree trunk. You can also place a nest box on the ground near the original nest location. If the mother has not relocated her nest yet, she will likely come back for her babies. If you plan on removing the nest, make sure you do not disturb the babies. The mother will take better care of her young than we can.
The next time you have to cut a tree, don’t disturb the nest. A mother squirrel may be nearby, and may be too afraid to move her babies to a new location. Afterward, leave the area until dark, and provide warmth to the babies. You may have to change the source of heat several times during the day. If you hear chukking noises from the nest, you may be working too close to the tree.
Feed a baby squirrel
The first step in removing a baby squirrel from its home is to ensure that it has water and food near the nest. Alternatively, you can place a hot water bottle near the nest and wait for the mother to come back. Be sure to stay out of sight, but don’t disturb the babies, since they cannot smell or taste. Once you’ve placed the baby outside, make sure to wait until it is dark so that mom doesn’t catch you.
If you find the baby squirrel in your backyard, make sure it’s a real baby, and not an adult. If you find a fluffy tail or a body that is longer than usual, it’s probably a baby. It’s also unlikely to have visible wounds, as baby squirrels often fall out of the nest. To ensure that the squirrel’s safety, look for other nests nearby or other babies.
