With Halloween fast approaching, household members have been trying to figure out how to make a squirrel costume for the kids in their life. Luckily, this easy costume idea can be accomplished without the help of a professional. First, you’ll need a cardboard box the size of a large diaper box. Using a bit of fur, your child can make ears, and acorns can be purchased at a craft store or glued on with glue.

Pin the tail to the costume and sew with a 1/2″ seam
To make the tail, draw a rectangle on the fabric, approximately four and a half inches from the center of the bottom. This measurement is one-twelfth of the height of the costume. Next, measure the width of each leg hole, from the outside edge to the center. Mark the middle of the marking on the other half of the costume. Cut the tail next to the marking, with the seam allowance in place. Tuck the tail into the costume, leaving the raw edges peeking out.
When sewing the tail, make sure to sew along the inside of the curve. The tail should be light and fluffy, since kids will be cosplaying. It can also be made from old pillows. Once the tail is stuffed, turn the costume right side out and stuff it with batting. Then pin the tail to the kids’ costume. Sew with a 1/2″ seam.
To make the costume, first measure the foot opening. Then, measure the width of the bottom of the costume. Divide that measurement by half. Then, make the seam allowances accordingly. If the child will be wearing a hood, sew the hood and tail in a single piece. When sewing the hood, pin the tail to the squirrel costume for kids and sew with a 1/2″ seam.
Freehand a curve from the arm hole down to the bottom of the costume
To make the squirrel costume, you’ll need a fabric pencil and a ruler. To draw a curve from the arm hole down to the bottom of the kids’ costume, start from the bottom and draw a line up several inches. Draw a curve in toward the arm hole and out to the bottom. Repeat on the other side of the costume. When hemming the costume, draw the curve parallel to the top of the dress.
To make the squirrel costume for kids, start with a brown and tan fabric. Cut the pieces out with scissors. Use a fabric marker to trace a curve from the arm hole down to the bottom of the kid’s squirrel costume. Next, cut out the fabric, taking care to keep the edges close to the seams. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you have finished the squirrel costume for kids.
The length and width of the squirrel costume for kids is the same as for adults. You should measure from the top of the shoulder to the top of the foot and divide the measurement by half. You may want to add a couple of inches if you want a little more give in the legs. Make sure to add seam allowances on the arm holes and wrists.
Measure around the widest part of the foot
First, you’ll need to measure the foot. To make sure that you get the correct size, measure the foot around the widest part of the foot. Then, measure around the rest of the foot and divide that measurement by two. In the case of a child, you can take fewer measurements to allow for some give. For adults, you might want to add a few inches to the measurement.
The length of the tail should be about four-and-a-half inches from the center of the bottom of the foot. Measure a 12th of the height of the costume, and then draw a line around the inside leg hole to the middle mark. Repeat this process for the other half. Cut the tail length next to the marking, with the seam allowance. Once the tail is complete, tuck it inside the costume.
