How to Make Ground Squirrel Poison
Fortunately, it’s quite simple to create a homemade ground squirrel poison, even for a novice. Among the ingredients you need to gather are bromadiolone, Castor oil, and Giant Destroyer gas killer. Whether you choose these ingredients will depend on the species of ground squirrel you’re targeting, but in most cases, a little bit of both will get the job done. You can even get a commercially-available poison.
To kill ground squirrels, you can use bait. Bromadiolone is a toxic substance for most animals. It can be deadly in just one day. In a field test, bromadiolone proved to be highly toxic in both birds and mammals. While it is highly toxic for humans, wildlife may eat the bait, and the lethal dose may be passed on to them. In some cases, a squirrel will eat the poisoned rodent itself and continue to eat the bait. This could leave the animal more vulnerable to predators.
Giant Destroyer Gas Killer
To get rid of ground squirrels, you can try using a Giant Destroyer Gas Killer. This gas combines sodium nitrate, sulfur, and charcoal. It is designed to kill ground squirrels and other rodents by suffocating them. It is effective but also poses a few risks. The gas is toxic to nontargeted animals, such as pets that eat rodents. This product can be quite costly, so you should do your research first.
Giant Destroyer Gas Killer contains no anticoagulant
Although the Giant Destroyer Gas Killer kills ground squirrels quickly, it has other dangers as well. It is not meant for use near water or sewer systems. It also contains a toxic chemical that can harm non-targeted animals, such as pets that eat rodents. Nonetheless, it can provide an effective solution for getting rid of ground squirrels. If you find ground squirrels in your attic, consider buying a Havahart Squirrel Trap instead. Trees around your roof line should be pruned, and you should also close any openings around your house.
When you want to kill ground squirrels, you can mix a mixture of half a cup of castor oil with two cups of dishwashing liquid. Pour this solution into a spray bottle and squirt it around the garden or property. Ground squirrels hate the smell of pepper, and will avoid an area that has been pepper sprayed. Castor oil is highly toxic for both dogs and cats, so you have to use it carefully.
Predators are known to spread coyote urine, which will scare ground squirrels and keep them away. To use coyote urine, sprinkle it along the property line, fence row, or path. Place a handful every 10 to 20 feet and wait for rain to break down the urine scent. Ground squirrels have a highly sensitive sense of smell and are often frightened by the smell.
Live cage traps
A quick homemade version of squirrel poison can be made using Irish Spring soap, which you can hang in mesh bags or hang from the ceiling. Irish Spring soap is an excellent repellent for ground squirrels. However, it is necessary to change the soap every few weeks as ground squirrels are difficult to lure away. Other effective repellents for ground squirrels are cheese, bacon, and dried fruit. If you’re looking for a more humane way to eliminate ground squirrels, you can use unpoisoned bait or live traps.
Aside from trapping, one method for controlling ground squirrel populations is fumigation. While fumigation is not an option for all areas, the spring and summer months are ideal times to apply the gas. These seasons allow the gas to remain in the burrow longer, resulting in a more effective poisoning. This method also works well if the soil is damp. It’s important to follow the label instructions, however, to ensure that the gas does not damage plants or other animals.
