Identifying a gray squirrel
There are many ways to identify gray squirrels. Their chewing habits can leave you wondering if you’re dealing with a nuisance pest. Gray squirrels can gnaw on almost anything, including electrical wires, wood furniture, and plastics. When they are inside your home, they can get into your attic, so be sure to check your siding and wood for bite marks. If you suspect that your squirrels have already gnawed on your insulation, look for chewed wires and fascia boards.
The grey squirrel is commonly found in gardens, parks, and woods. It is often tame, and is often a frequent visitor to bird feeders. It is a prolific feeder of pine cones and hazelnuts, and it also caches food in the autumn. In order to store food for the winter, grey squirrels build nests from twigs, leaves, and strips of bark. Their young are born from late winter to the early spring, and the squirrels have two litters of three to four young per year.
Managing a gray squirrel
Gray squirrels are native to Canada, New Brunswick, Ontario, and eastern Texas. They have also been introduced into British Columbia and Vancouver Island. They breed twice a year, usually in the late winter or early spring. Mating occurs during courtship and the dominant male usually mates with the female. Gray squirrels are blind and hairless at birth, and their young are independent after eight to 10 weeks of age. Unlike red squirrels, who tend to build tree-leaf nests, gray squirrels breed twice a year and produce litters that last for two to four months.
This new handbook reviews methods of grey squirrel control, how to detect signs of the animals’ presence, and a guide to current legislation. The guide’s spiral-bound format makes it easy to carry along while hiking in the woods. It also contains a handy map of grey squirrel populations and their range. It is also available online, and can be downloaded. Managing a gray squirrel is important for both wildlife and human well-being.
Trapping a gray squirrel
Trapping a gray squirrel is a safe and effective way to get rid of a problem infestation in your home. This squirrel can be found in deciduous, mixed, and coniferous forests. In a residential area, the best time to trap the animal is before the ground-nesting birds lay their eggs. Traps are effective in eliminating 90% of the problem. If you’re not comfortable setting traps, you can hire someone to do it for you.
If you’re worried about the safety of the bait, consider using an Elgeeco humane squirrel trap, which has a small olfactory attractant. These humane traps can be mounted on a tree trunk, fence, or inside a loft. The squirrels are trapped high up in the air, away from predators, which allows the trap to be effective. The WCS Tube Trap is another trap option that’s approved for killing grey squirrels, as well as mink, rats, and weasels.
Removing its entrails
Removing the entrails of gray squirrels is a simple task, but it is not as easy as it sounds. First, you must skin the animal. Cut through the stomach up to the sternum, leaving a flap of skin attached to the tail. Cut under the back legs and continue the flap of skin two to three inches away from the first vertical cut. Make small cuts in the skin on the breastbone and back legs to separate the musk glands.
Once you’ve skinned the animal, remove the pelt from the underbelly of the animal. Ideally, you should cut the skin loose at the base of the tail and cut away the back legs, which are connected to the chest cavity. Next, use a knife to cut the pelt away from the head and legs. Cut the head off after you’ve removed the legs. Once you’ve removed the head and legs, remove the intestine from the back legs. Using a catfish skinner to peel off the back legs is a good alternative.
Using a firearm to dispatch a gray squirrel
Using a firearm to dispatch a grey squirrel is a legal way to eliminate the pest. You can apply for a squirrel nuisance permit from the Department of Environmental Conservation, which grants you a license to kill the furry creatures. Gray squirrels can be a nuisance because they destroy flower buds, bird eggs, and priceless bulbs. You can also kill the pest with an air rifle, which is legal to own and use in public areas.
If you are using a firearm to dispatch a gray squirrel, make sure to use it properly and safely. Aim your bullets at the squirrel’s head, not the animal’s face. This technique can cause more harm to the squirrel than good, so make sure to keep it away from the property and nearby houses. While using a firearm to dispatch a gray squirrel may be the only legal option, be sure to stay out of sight of neighbors and the public.
