Gray squirrel
The first time you go gray squirrel hunting in Kentucky, it can be quite the daunting experience. The gray squirrel is known to be finicky, using every limb and leaf to its advantage. You may be excited as you stare at your empty hunting coat with a hopeless sense of anticipation. But you’ll soon discover that the first time you hunt a gray squirrel is only the beginning. There are plenty more steps and outings to come, but that first squirrel is truly a special experience.
In Kentucky, you’ll find two main seasons for hunting gray squirrels and fox squirrels. The spring and fall seasons last for about five weeks, respectively. While hunting the fall squirrels, it’s important to be aware of the laws that govern the different types of squirrels. You’ll need to know which ones are protected in your state, as well as which permits you’ll need. Moreover, the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife encourages you to hunt in a safe manner.
Fox squirrel
When you are looking for a great place to hunt fox squirrel in Kentucky, you will want to consider a few different locations. Kentucky’s fall squirrel season is one of the longest in the country, lasting 193 days from Aug. 21 to Feb. 28. This season is open statewide, and every public hunting tract is likely to have them. There are bag limits of six per day and a twelve-squirrel possession limit.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife regulates the season. The exact dates are published on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife’s website. Generally, squirrel hunting season starts on the third Saturday in August, with Virginia following suit in September. Hunters must wear blaze orange to protect themselves from the animals. The clothing and blaze orange vest should be easily visible from all sides. They should also know where to look for trees. Squirrels prefer an environment with a lot of trees near a cornfield.
Flying squirrel
While many people enjoy hunting for gray and flying squirrels, there are a few different species that you should know about in Kentucky. Grays have black and grayish backs and tail hairs, and the fox has orange to yellow upper body and belly fur. The white variety is rare, but does exist. These squirrels are native to the eastern half of Kentucky, and are called ‘grizzled salt and pepper gray.’ The two main species of flyers in Kentucky are the fox squirrel and the gray.
The breeding season for flying squirrels occurs in April and May, with litters usually weighing three to four. A female will lay her eggs in her nest for 40 days. At birth, the young weigh less than an ounce and have no hair except short whiskers. They open their eyes and begin practicing their gliding abilities at 28 days old. Sometimes the female will move the litters to clean nests, usually in woodpecker holes.

Regulations for a flintlock long rifle
For many years, hunters in the United States used flintlock rifles to hunt deer. These long rifles were capable of firing well after the trigger was pulled. In the early nineteenth century, hunters were comfortable taking anything they could see within 150 yards. Today, most hunters use shorter shots of fifty to eighty yards. Until recently, flintlock rifles were not as common as they are today, but they remain a great way to hunt.
During the Napoleonic period, flintlocks were often used as military arms and self-defense weapons. They had a relatively short range, so they were often used as adjuncts to swords. They were also generally smoothbore, although some were rifled. Flintlock rifles were also used for military purposes and were often considered unsuitable for squirrel hunting.
