How to Get Rid of Ground Squirrels Without Using Poison
If you want to get rid of ground squirrels without using poison, you can try the humane traps and the live cage traps, as well as the use of Apple cider vinegar and garlic to repel them. However, these methods will need to be applied periodically to be effective. Fortunately, there are some other homemade options. You can mix hot sauce with water, vinegar, or garlic and spray it on fences and stakes in the vegetable garden.
To get rid of ground squirrels, Lowe’s sells lethal, humane traps. These traps are designed to snap the neck of the animal, and are ideal for killing nuisance rodents. The traps are made of heavy-gauge alloy steel and have a rust-resistant coating. Using these traps is not recommended around pets or small children.
There are different types of squirrel traps available, including box traps, Sherman traps, and humane traps. The non-lethal types capture the animal in a rectangular cage. They contain bait on a plate inside the cage. The squirrel will approach the plate and apply pressure to it. This triggers a spring, which closes the door. The squirrel will be trapped when it has been caught.
If you have a problem with a ground squirrel, you can try one of several different poisons. You can try poison bait, which is a combination of diphacinone and chlorophacinone. To prepare the bait, you spread rolled oats and mix the poison into the grains. Then, place it in the locations where the ground squirrels typically feed on seeds. To apply this poison, you should place a couple of tablespoons in each location.
Another method to kill ground squirrels is to use fumigation. Although this method is considered safe when used correctly, the fumes are dangerous if they are not properly handled. You should never apply fumigation near flammable materials or dry grass. Fumigation fumes tend to accumulate in confined spaces and under structures. You should always follow directions on the label to prevent poisoning from contaminating the environment.
Live cage traps
When catching ground squirrels, live cage traps can be the most effective method of capturing these rodents. They can be set up in multiple locations or wire-cage traps. The Black Fox repeating live trap, for example, is an excellent choice for capturing several individuals. This trap features heavy-gauge wire doors that are designed to remain open for baiting. Self-closing doors also keep ground squirrels from escaping. While baiting a trap, ground squirrels usually prefer pistachios, almonds, walnuts, barley, and grass.
Snap traps, which are typically used to catch mice and rats, can be used to catch ground squirrels as well. When the squirrel steps into the trap, a metal bar snaps, killing it instantly. Snap traps can be dangerous, however, and should only be used in a supervised area. The animals can be deadly if you use them on pets or children. This is the most common method of squirrel control.
Apple cider vinegar
If you’ve ever noticed a ground squirrel in your yard, you might be wondering how to get rid of it. Apple cider vinegar has a strong smell that repels squirrels and can be safely sprayed around plants. You can spray it directly on the squirrels or dilute it and use it as a diluted mist. If you want to use vinegar to prevent ground squirrels from accessing your yard, you can also make a spray out of apple cider vinegar and water.
This method has been proven to be effective, even for the most persistent ground squirrels. Although apple cider vinegar is the best repellent for ground squirrels, it doesn’t work for all squirrel species. That’s why other repellents such as garlic and coffee grounds have been popular for centuries. Luckily, these are also cheap and easily accessible. If you have a garden, this is a great way to protect your plants.
Peppermint essential oil
If you want to keep a ground squirrel away from your yard, you should mix a few drops of rosemary essential oil with two cups of water. Spray the mixture around your yard and garden. Or, soak cotton balls in the mixture and leave them in your yard near entrance holes. Remember to change the cotton balls every two days to keep them fresh. If you want to keep a ground squirrel away for good, you can also make a homemade spray with garlic and hot sauce.
Peppermint oil has many beneficial health benefits and is a natural pest repellent. Ground squirrels don’t like peppermint, so try applying it as a spray or soak a cloth in it. It is very effective at repelling the ground squirrel. You can also seal holes with peppermint oil. This will keep the ground squirrel away for good. Peppermint essential oil can also be applied to the exterior of the house to keep the squirrel away.
