The animal welfare organization, Animals Asia, has called the practice of bludgeoning squirrels in the United Kingdom a “horrible act of cruelty.” The culls, which kill grey squirrels, are not only cruel, but also environmentally harmful, pointless and inhumane. One of the reasons for the widespread killing of red squirrels is that grey squirrels carry the pox virus, and the reds are already at risk. This means that eradicating the grey population will save the red squirrels, but at a cost to the reds. In the long run, removing the grey population will help reds recolonize.
