The Chartreux is a small, robust cat with a robust build and strong hunting instincts. It was originally brought from the Near East by merchant ships and eventually became a native breed in France. For centuries, this breed was not treated well, but it was coveted by its owners for its water-repellent fur and rat-catching prowess. Luckily, their temperaments are now appreciated around the world.
American Curl
The American Curl cat breed is known for its unusual ears, which curl backwards toward the center of the back of the skull. This breed originated in Lakewood, California, and developed from a spontaneous mutation. Its name comes from the fact that the American Curl cat is the only breed with such peculiar ears. However, it is not always clear why this particular breed developed its ears in the first place. Read on to discover more about the cat’s history and origin.
The history of the American Curl cat began in the late 1970s when a stray cat named Shulamith befriended Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California. She gave birth to kittens with unusually curled ears and became the foundation female for the American Curl cat breed. This breed is relatively new, and the Rugas’ genetic research has led to the recognition of this breed by numerous cat registries.
Bombay
A squirrel in Bombay has a bushy tail! Unlike the other urban squirrels, Bombay’s fox-like companion does not appear threatening. However, they are known to cause extensive damage to orchards and sometimes even feed on people’s palms! In addition, these creatures are rodents and can carry a wide range of diseases, including malaria and leptospirosis.
Birman
The name of this breed is a reference to the long, bushy tail of the Birman cat. This particular breed is an extreme-oriental cat, originally bred for religious purposes in temples. Although the Birman cat is prohibited from sale, it was brought to the UK by Miss Thadde Hadish, who bought two cats from the temple. They were probably stolen by a temple servant, who would have fled to avoid punishment.
The Birman cat is a sociable and outgoing kitty. Similar to a dog, this breed thrives on human interaction. While it is affectionate and loyal to its owners, it tends to get depressed if left alone for too long. Hence, this breed is not recommended for people who are away for long periods of time. However, if you are home most of the time, this cat is likely to be a good companion.
