When a squirrel is suffering from some sort of pain, it may be a good idea to seek the help of a veterinarian for rehabilitation. Squirrels can have minor injuries, but they can also develop life-threatening problems and require immediate medical treatment. After examining the injured squirrel, veterinarians can decide if it is recovering or needs more complex medical care. Vitamin D and calcium are essential for healthy bones and joints.
Light therapy
If your pet has been injured, light therapy may be an excellent choice for the relief of their pain. While anti-inflammatory medicine can help, it can also be harmful to cats. Light therapy for squirrels involves placing a light source on an affected area. The full spectrum of sunlight is provided throughout the day, and this type of light can quickly alleviate your animal’s discomfort. It is important to remember that squirrels need water to survive, so it’s important to check the animal’s hydration level as well. If the animal has a moist mouth or nose, dehydration is likely the cause.
Vitamin D
Supplementing your squirrel’s diet with vitamin D can help the animal with pain, inflammation, and other symptoms. In addition, higher doses of vitamin D are also effective as a rodenticide. The best way to supplement your squirrel’s diet with vitamin D is to place their cage outdoors for about an hour every day. Make sure the cage doesn’t face direct sunlight, though. To get natural sunlight for your squirrel, try installing aluminum screening or hardware cloth on the cage. A veterinary doctor can recommend the appropriate amount of vitamin D and supplementation.
Calcium
One theory for the use of calcium in treating the pain of grey squirrels is that the animal’s diet lacks calcium. Calcium is essential for all body functions, including the transmission of small electrical signals. It’s also found in large amounts in the phloem of trees. In fact, most angiosperm trees contain dissolved calcium in the cell vacuoles, where it acts as a storage facility for excess calcium. This explains why many squirrels are lame and suffer from brittle bones.
Sunlight
It may be tempting to use OTC medications for livestock on a squirrel in pain, but do not give them this treatment unless you have a veterinarian’s approval. The FDA has not approved OTC meds for animals. Instead, you should consult a vet and use one of the many home remedies recommended by the Squirl Board. Sunlight, on the other hand, has no known side effects.
Specialized diet
While squirrels need blocks and supplemental foods to survive, a special diet can provide additional nutrients and variety. The diet is also known as the “triangle,” combining the base diet with wet foods, vitamins, and minerals. Combined with the blocks, it provides a high-quality, balanced diet for a squirrel in pain. A squirrel is an intelligent creature that can sense when it is in pain and respond to human comfort. During a recent visit to WildCare Wildlife Hospital, Susan noticed that the squirrel was in distress. After she covered the animal’s eyes with a plastic bag, Susan lifted it off the birdfeeder hanger. The animal was taken to the wildlife hospital as quickly as possible. WildCare’s medical team has seen many squirrels do crazy things and has learned how to handle them.
Medications
If your squirrels have pain and you think you can help them, medications are an option. Medications for squirrel pain can be obtained from your veterinarian, although the risk of overdosing is great. These meds may cause severe side effects, including diarrhea. It is also a good idea to have a triage area where you can administer medication to your squirrels. Different states have different laws regarding veterinary practices, so you should ask your veterinarian about the rules in your state. However, if you have a local veterinarian, you should keep in mind that vets can legally prescribe medicines. While most vets in Florida allow rehabbers to have their own med kits, it’s best to get specific meds from your veterinarian or farm supply store.
