A squirrel can’t eat every type of food. However, there are certain foods that aren’t suitable for them. Here are some of them: raw onions, hibiscus blooms, passionflower petals, and plant bulbs. These foods are known to repel squirrels. You can also keep them away by using pepper spray and garlic spray. Some cats and dogs will also deter squirrels from eating the same foods.

hibiscus blooms
To make your hibiscus plants safe from critters, you should consider using a repellent. Commercial repellents contain naphthalene, which is a scent that squirrels cannot stand. You can sprinkle mothballs around your hibiscus bed, or use cotton buds dipped in a strong-smelling oil. If you don’t want to spend money on a repellent, you can simply use dog hair.
A natural pesticide that will keep squirrels from eating your hibiscus plants is called blood meal. This compound is made from bone meal, a by-product of the slaughterhouse, and it has a bloodlike odor. It can be purchased at a garden supply store. Use only a small amount, about 4 ounces will cover 1 square yard of soil.
passionflower petals
There are several plants that are not edible to squirrels. Among them are marigolds and dragon heads. Marigolds have a sweet, mild citrusy taste. Dragon heads are poisonous to squirrels, but the seeds are not. These are perennials in the Mint family with two-lipped, tubular flowers. They have a peppery, grassy taste. You can place them on your yard for squirrel deterrence.
The petals can be used in tea. The petals retain a mild strawberry flavour and aroma. The leaves and green buds can be eaten raw or toasted. Likewise, the petals can be added to salads and sandwiches. But don’t let squirrels eat them! The petals contain pollen, so don’t let your squirrel eat them! You should only eat the petals after thoroughly cleaning them.
plant bulbs
If you want to protect your garden from squirrels, plant bulbs that squirrels can’t eat. You can discourage squirrels by lining planting holes with hardware cloth or by using leaves and mulch to disguise the edges. Another option is to plant bulbs in a low groundcover, such as a container. But be careful not to use anything too heavy or strong because the squirrels can crush or chew through the materials.
A deer repellent is also a good option. Squirrels are drawn to scents that make their habitat unpleasant. You can use crushed oyster shells or small gravel to deter them. You can also sprinkle crushed red pepper flakes over newly planted bulbs, as these make the foliage look less attractive to them. If none of these methods work, consider incorporating a combination of deer repellent and bulb planting.
raw onions
You can discourage squirrels from eating raw onions by placing them outside of your home. You can also cover your onions with chicken wire mesh to keep them from getting to them. You can also put a repellent on them such as hot pepper sauce or oil. But do not use these repellents in large quantities as they are harmful to squirrels. Try putting some out for them to see if they are interested.
Squirrels can’t eat raw onions, garlic, or any other spicy food. They will also be repelled by hot peppers, as they will not like the strong scent and taste. Don’t be fooled by this fact – they may actually prefer these foods to yours. So if you’re a nervous person, don’t give your squirrels hot peppers as pets.
raw garlic
You can use a variety of methods to repel squirrels, including putting down a fence around your garlic bulbs. Another method is to grow a garlic garden. Growing your garlic outdoors will produce healthier cloves and less chance of damage from squirrels. However, you must ensure that you clean up your garden after harvesting the garlic. Squirrels are easily attracted to broken or missing bulbs, so you should be sure to pick up any twigs, stems, or leaves to make the environment less desirable for them.
In general, squirrels will try just about anything, but certain food items are more appealing to them than others. Raw garlic and onion smell foul and are not suitable for squirrels. Even hot peppers are repulsive to them, which is why many people try spraying them with pepper spray to discourage squirrels from eating them. While this isn’t a permanent solution, it works! In extreme cases, cats and dogs can keep squirrels away from your garden.
