You may have a hard time separating them without the aid of a photo, but it is possible to tell if they’re the same species. To make it easier, look for tracks made by both types of squirrels.
The front paw prints of gray squirrels are similar to rabbits, but the hind paw prints look similar to human handprints. Raccoons have five toes on their front foot, while gray squirrels have four toes on each foot. The front and hind foot prints of gray squirrels will often look like handprints if they’ve been urinating on a surface. Fortunately, the species is not a common pest in campgrounds, and chipmunks are a more common nuisance.
Eastern gray squirrels
