Losing hair is a common problem in many animals. Loss of fur can result in complete or partial denial of the animal’s insulating layer. When a squirrel loses his fur, he may become exposed to the elements, which could result in his death. Thankfully, squirrels often recover spontaneously after experiencing loss of fur. Listed below are a few possible reasons why a squirrel might lose his fur.

Notoedric mange
A weakened immune system can make an animal more vulnerable to notoedric mange. This condition results in loss of hair and thickened skin on the squirrel’s body. In the most severe cases, the animal may become emaciated. The disease is not contagious to humans. The symptoms of notoedric mange are similar to those of sarcoptic mange, but the symptomatic severity is much worse. The animal will not require medication to treat the condition.
The infection is caused by the presence of mange mites, which live on fur. These mites can affect any animal, including foxes, coyotes, and squirrels. It is not transmitted to humans, but it can be spread to dogs through contact with mangy wild canids. There is no evidence that the mites in notoedric mange can be transferred from a squirrel to a dog or cat.
Sarcoptic mange
Squirrels are not the only animals affected by sarcoptic mange. This disease affects both captive and wild animals in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The mites that cause sarcoptic mange have adapted to a specific host, but are sometimes transiently infected with human scabies. Humans can also contract the infection from an animal if the animal has scabies. Some areas of the world have suffered from severe sarcoptic mange outbreaks and decreased numbers of wolves and other wildlife species.
The mites that cause sarcoptic mange in mammals are known to infest many different species, including white-tail deer, elk, and bison. It is also a serious problem in domestic and wild rabbits. The disease is spread to humans through direct contact with an affected animal or contaminated environment. It’s also spread through direct contact, so it is important to prevent the spread of the mites in the environment.
Fungal infections
If you suspect that your squirrel has a bacterial or fungal infection, it’s important to consult a veterinarian. Open wounds can result in massive loss of fur. Animals can die because they lack the insulating fur. Fortunately, these infections often heal spontaneously. In some cases, you can treat the squirrel yourself. To treat the bacterial infection, you can buy ivermectin paste. This is available online and in some pet stores, including Walmart. When treating your squirrel, make sure to spread the paste onto a shelled nut. Apply to the squirrel’s fur once a week for three weeks. Keep in mind that ivermectin is toxic to dogs.
Most cases of hair loss in squirrels are caused by superficial fungal diseases known as dermatophytoses. As the hair falls out, the squirrel’s immune system will eventually fight off the infection and grow back normal hair. Some fungal infections are associated with damp weather. This winter’s wet weather may have also contributed to hair loss in the squirrels, but most animals recover from the fungal infection.
Traumatic encounters
Having a pet squirrel is not necessarily a good idea. Squirrels can become infected with mange. While you won’t get the disease from handling it, you can spread it to other squirrels by sleeping with an affected one. This condition is similar to scabies in humans. This article will discuss a few ways to prevent the squirrel from becoming infected.
