What Family Does a Squirrel Belong To?
A squirrel is a small rodent with a skull and rostrum that are relatively short, with an arched profile. The lateral masseter muscle originates on the prominent bump on the rostrum, called the masseteric tubercle. Their skulls also feature small infraorbital foramena, long jugals, and well-developed postorbital processes. The squirrel’s face also features large, flattened bullae that are not inflated.

Sciuromorpha
The suborder Sciuromorpha contains 307 species and 91 genera of rodents. There are three families within this order: Sciuridae, Squirrels and Relatives, and Pyrgomorphae. This suborder includes the family Red squirrel, which is named for its white tail and blanching in summer and moulting in fall.
Sciuromorphae are closely related to apes. The family includes two subspecies that are native to Britain and Ireland. Both genus Sciurus and subgenus Tenes contain thirteen species. Sciurus is the family’s largest and most widespread member, with the largest range. Sciuromorphae are closely related to the apes, and are often confused with one another.
Myomorpha
Squirrels belong to the family Myomorpha, which also includes rats, gerbils, and mice. These rodents have an average of sixteen teeth, no premolars, and molars that are rooted. Their unique jaw architecture allows them to gnaw more effectively. The family also includes dormice, a small rodent found in the United States.
Although all of these species are related, their habitats are distinct. Tree squirrels are found in most forested regions, while ground squirrels and marmots are found in wetlands and deserts. All three families have similar behavior and habitat, though the latter inhabits the southwest United States and the antelope ground squirrel occupies desert areas. A common feature of all three species is their short activity periods, which make them ideal for survival in a variety of environments.
Castorimorpha
The suborder Castorimorpha contains 96 species of rodents that live in North America, Central America, and Europe. These species have distinctive characteristics, including a flat tail, webbed hind feet, and a nictating membrane. Most castorids are semi-aquatic, with the exception of the beavers, which are terrestrial. Beavers build dams made of mud and are not closely related to squirrels.
The order Sciuromorpha includes several rodent families, including the Sciuridae, the Castorimorpha, and the Heteromyidae. The Sciuromorpha is traditionally classified based on the shape of the infraorbital canal. Members of the Sciuridae have a zygomasseteric system that attaches the lateral masseter muscle to the side of the rostrum rather than the medial masseter muscle. However, the rest of the rodent families, which include the Castoridae and the Geomyidae, are classified in different suborders.
Anomaluromorpha
Squirrels are part of the suborder Anomaluromorpha. There are 15 extant species, 9 genera, and three families of squirrels. They include the Scaly-tailed squirrel, Nementchamyidae, and Springhares. Some species are similar to each other, but differ in their overall size and shape. They are mainly vegetarian and have little contact with humans. They are not considered threatened, although they must be kept protected from bushmeat trade and deforestation in their ranges.
The family includes flying squirrels. These squirrels are part of the tribe Pteromyini and were previously classified in the subfamily Pteromyinae. Most flying squirrels are found in Asia, with fifteen genera depicted. In addition to flying squirrels, the family also includes a number of flying species. Some of the most commonly seen flying squirrels are:
Hystricomorpha
The rodent family Hystricomorpha includes a number of different species. The three suborders are the Myomorpha, the Sciuridae, and the Hystricomorpha. The domestic guinea pig is classified as a hystricomorph and is a member of the family Caviidae. However, DNA sequencing has challenged this traditional phylogenetic position of guinea pig. Furthermore, evidence suggests that Hystricomorpha could be reclassified outside of the Rodentia. Further work is necessary to establish the family’s proper placement.
The type species is Sciurus vulgaris. It has a white tail in the summertime and a white tail after moulting. The family contains one species in each genus, which could mean a complex species or a subspecies. The Sciurinae has about a hundred species in twenty genera, and is divided into two subspecies: the Sciurini Tribe, which includes the type genus, Sciurus, and the Tamiasciurus family.
African pygmy squirrel
The African pygmy squirrel belongs to the squirrel family. These small mammals have no specific food preference. They are omnivores, feeding on fruit, seeds, bark, insects, and other plant matter. They also eat termites. Though these rodents are not harmful, they are frightened of humans. Therefore, they are not often seen as pets, as they tend to avoid humans.
The African pygmy squirrel is the smallest species of the squirrel family. It lives in the trees of many tropical rainforests and is diurnal. They share some features with other tree squirrels, including long hind limbs and a symmetrical body. They also have a rounded head and eyes, and their incisors and molars grow throughout their lives. They are also solitary. They may occasionally live with other individuals, but they do not form a group.
