Season 4 of Shameless takes a dark turn
The fourth season of Shameless has taken a darker tone than its predecessors, focusing on Fiona’s trouble with the law and the possibility of Frank’s death. The season starts with Fiona adjusting to her new job, dating her boss, and dealing with a serious situation. The series’s main characters, Kate and Jake, are once again well-developed and likable, but their relationships are not always as rosy.
As the seasons go on, Carl begins to develop a love interest. Although he doesn’t have a major storyline, he is infatuated with Bonnie, a woman who lives in a van with her family. In spite of this, Carl ends up falling for Bonnie, which leads to him being thrown in jail for the drug trade. However, this love interest doesn’t last long, as Carl begins to feel more tempted to join Nick’s circle of friends.
Fiona loses all the money she needs for the winter
In the winter premiere of Shameless, Fiona finds herself in a precarious position. She’s drinking vodka early in the morning, lashing out at customers, and ranting about gum under the tables. Her former real estate partner stops by her new job and offers her $100,000 up front. Fiona decides to sell her building to a new owner, but it doesn’t go well. But Fiona needs to pay for her bills now.
The money Fiona needs for the winter disappears. She uses Find My Phone to track down the car, but she loses control and crashes the car. She then leaves the city, where her mother is staying. But she’s not done. She loses all the money she needs to get by and has to borrow money from her mother and sister. It’s clear that Fiona won’t be able to make it without the help of her friends, so she loses all the money she needs for the winter.
Kids’ money is spent on drugs, toys, and a brand new car
In the movie “Shameless,” Fiona raises money for Monica’s squirrel project, but ends up spending it all on drugs, American Girl dolls, and a brand new car. The film illustrates how spending money can have consequences, and Fiona’s guilt over her tryst with Jody fuels her spending spree.
Character assassination of Mickey Gallagher
This character assassination takes place in season five, during the time when Ian and Mickey have finally gotten to know each other and Ian is more comfortable being himself. The dialogue between Ian and Caleb also makes the character appear to be abusive and toxic, which is both disingenuous and disrespectful of Mickey’s character and the fans of the show. The episode includes a video of Ian rejecting Mickey’s attempts to communicate with him.
In “Shameless,” Ian and Mickey’s coming-out scenes are some of the most memorable moments in television history. It’s hard to imagine a more explosive scene than when Mickey comes out in front of a bar full of people, while his father is hot and drunk. Mickey reveals his sexuality to Ian in an attempt to win Ian’s approval, and the fear that he will lose him forever overcame Ian’s self-hatred and fear of rejection.
Sheila’s guilt over her earlier tryst with Jody
Sheila’s younger brother, Liam, plays the part of her son, whose parents are in prison. She is enamored with prison life and is even willing to start a riot in order to get an extension to her sentence. Sadly, she ends up in prison and cannot tell her daughter the truth. In the finale of the series, she confronts Frank about her earlier tryst with Jody and is forced to take a lie to protect her son.
