Psychropotes longicauda
The genus Psychropotes contains many varieties of sea cucumbers. Most of the species are cylinder-shaped and red-to-violet in color. Most species have a sail-like appendage used during their larval stage for swimming, but this appendage does not exist once the animals have reached adulthood. Their larvae are transparent and benthopelagic and are about two centimeters long.
The psychropotes species is cosmopolitan and widespread in the oceans. Its genetics are highly diverse and may be related to its geographic distribution. Psychropotes longicauda has been studied in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Over a 34-year period, a collection of 128 specimens of this species was assembled in the Porcupine Abyssal Plain. The researchers discovered two distinct lineages in terms of global distribution.
Peacock flounder
The peacock flounder is a flat, circular-shaped fish with brightly colored spots that are present on only one side of its body. The male and female flounders have unequal pelvic fins, which may be why they are sometimes referred to as “peacocks”. The peacock flounder is about 45 millimeters long. This species is mainly found in the Atlantic Ocean and is absent from the Gulf of Mexico. It also lives off the coasts of Ascension Island and the Gulf of Guinea. Its natural coloring makes it easy to spot.
Its deep oval body is rounded laterally and its eyes are located on the left side of its head. The lower eye is set farther forward than the upper one. Males have a larger space between their eyes than females. The head has a strong spine and a bony knob on its snout. It also has a large oblique mouth and a bluntly pointed caudal fin.
