Moderately sized Richardson’s ground squirrel populations have been shown to increase biomass of Medicago lupulina and Elymus repens, two species that are important to farmers and ranchers because they provide high-quality protein forage and promote animal weight gain.
The extreme heatwave in March 2012 may have affected the reproductive phenology of male Richardson’s ground squirrels. Females emerged from hibernation 13 days earlier than the usual period and males three days later than normal. This may have caused the females to emerge earlier than usual, causing less time to develop reproductive organs. Males in 2012 and 2010 generally displayed less plasticity when it comes to their emergence.
In spite of the fact that Richardson’s ground squirrels are primarily herbivores, they do occasionally nibble on meat. In a typical year, an average of twelve ground squirrels per ha can eat 90 pounds of forage per acre. They can also cause significant crop damage. They can also wreak havoc on farm equipment and irrigated fields. The use of rodenticides is not a viable solution.
