The female then chooses the strongest male and mates with him. The young of the gray squirrel are blind and hairless and weigh less than one ounce. While they do not hibernate, the males compete to attract the female, and the female selects the male with the highest speed.

The red and gray squirrels have similar ranges and are not very different from each other. Their fur is a rusty brown in summer and off-white in winter. Females have prominent ear tufts and are active during the day. They start gathering food in the fall. They live six to seven years in the wild and ten to twelve years in captivity. The red squirrel is the fastest of all the squirrel species.
In the United Kingdom, the population of red squirrels was decimated by a virus in the 1950s that killed off a third of the species. Peter Lurz, a biologist based in Germany, studied red squirrels in England for 25 years.
