The absorption spectrum of a gray squirrel lens reaches a maximum at 370 nm. Peak densities in the intact lens range from twelve to twenty. In aqueous extracts, an additional maximum at 265 nm occurs. This additional maximum may only be partially accounted for by the presence of ascorbic acid. The aqueous extract of a ground squirrel’s lens shows maxima at the same wavelengths.
The eastern gray squirrel is a species that is not a significant pest and does not cause significant damage to crops. However, they are important reforestation agents as they bury nuts and seeds which will germinate later, helping to replenish hardwood forests that were lost to human activity. However, they can be nuisances, digging up bulbs in gardens and driving birds away from bird feeders. Despite these common problems, eastern gray squirrels are loved by city dwellers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Red squirrel
The red-haired red squirrel is the most common species of ground squirrel in the United States. It has a tail that is almost as long as its body. The term squirrel has Greek origins, meaning shade tail. Its long tail helps balance the animal and can also be used for communication. Squirrels flick their tails to alert other squirrels or predators to their presence. They do not form packs to hunt together.
The grey-furred grey squirrel is native to North America and was brought to the UK by the aristocracy as an ornamental species. While they are highly adaptable, they are also hated by certain groups and are killed in large numbers in the UK. Many conservationists consider mass killing of grey squirrels to be justified in an effort to increase red squirrel populations. However, this method may lead to more harm to red squirrels than good.
Eastern fox squirrel
The Eastern fox is a beautiful yellow-rich gray squirrel, with a white belly and a twitching tail. It spends most of its time on the ground. Its habitat includes woodlands adjacent to openings, although it is also tolerant of a prairie-type environment. While gray and fox squirrels do not interbreed, they both share a few acres in which to live. Sometimes, they will share territories with other squirrels. Their fossils date from the Eocene Epoch, when the earth was covered in forests.
The distribution of pelage coloration of eastern foxes varies greatly throughout Florida. In fact, there are six different color morphs. The a* and L* axes have the greatest variability, while the a* axis has the narrowest range and lowest SD. For the same pelage coloration, a pair of a* and b* axes are the best predictors of pelage variation among fox squirrels.
Delmarva fox squirrel
The Delmarva fox squirrel is a striking, silver-colored species of gray and yellow squirrel that roams through hardwood forests. Its graceful movements make it a delightful animal to watch, and they can be incredibly comical at times. Hunting has greatly reduced the squirrel’s population, and it now occupies only about 10 percent of its historic range. To help the species recover, federal biologists have been working with natural resources officials in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware.
A fifty-year-old conservation plan has helped restore the population of the Delmarva fox squirrel. It was listed as an endangered species in 1967 and fewer than 10 percent of its original range remained. But efforts to protect the species have resulted in a dramatic rebound of the species, and in 2015, it was officially removed from the endangered species list. With the help of conservationists, landowners, and local residents, the fox squirrel has returned to its former range, making it a prime example of how collaborative conservation efforts can yield results.
White squirrel
The coat color of the white or gray-colored squirrel varies from region to region. However, most squirrels are a mix of gray and brown. In general, the fur on the upper half of the body is white, with a tan belly. This color variation results from the presence of regulatory genes that suppress the production of melanin in certain regions. This behavior is highly adaptive, helping the squirrel blend in better with the light-colored sky.
The range of the gray-colored squirrel is confined to the eastern half of North America, ranging from the Atlantic coast through the Great Plains and the Gulf Coast to just north of the US-Canada border. However, this species has been introduced into the west, and is common in Washington, Oregon, and Quebec. Some have even spread to southern British Columbia and California. They are one of the most common mammals in many parts of the world, and are not only a source of entertainment, but can be eaten.
