What Milk Do You Feed a Baby Squirrel?
During the first few weeks of a baby squirrel’s life, you should be careful about the type of milk or liquid you give him. You may find it hard to determine which is the best choice, as some squirrels are too small to drink a large amount in one sitting. Therefore, you need to provide your little friend with a liquid every half an hour. The best time to give your squirrel some liquid is when his urine turns light yellow. Remember to clean the baby squirrel’s face with a warm cloth after each drinking session. The water should be free from salt and sugar, as they leave a sticky residue on the baby squirrel’s face.
Esbilac milk or Pedialyte
If your baby squirrel has diarrhea, you should switch him over to a high-quality rodent formula such as Pedialyte or Esbilac milk. To avoid causing diarrhea in your baby squirrel, make sure to dilute the formula to one part powder and two parts water. Always use lukewarm water. Never give your baby squirrel hot formula. Never feed your baby squirrel cow’s or soy milk or even homemade formula. Homemade formulas can be fatal for your squirrel!
If you do not have access to a veterinarian, you may consider trying a homemade formula. If you’re unsure about the amount of milk or formula to feed your squirrel, 5% of its body weight should do. The feeding amount can be determined by using a small scale with gram measurement. A squirrel that weighs 100 grams would get five ml of formula, while a baby squirrel weighing 100 grams would receive five ml of formula. The amount of milk you give your baby will depend on his age, size and condition.
Goat milk
Goat milk is a nutritious, easy-to-prepare food that provides the necessary nutrients for a growing animal. It is a good choice for young animals that cannot access their mother’s milk. Goat milk contains calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients for proper growth and development. While human infant formula is available at many pet stores, it is not recommended for use on baby squirrels.
When feeding a baby squirrel, start by measuring the body weight of the animal. Use a scale that measures weight in grams, and multiply this number by 5% or 7%. Once you have calculated the right amount, use a baby animal feeding bottle to feed the animal. If the animal is under two weeks old, you can feed goat milk to feed a baby squirrel for the first few days. After that, you can introduce solid food.
Esbilac
If you have a newborn squirrel in your home, you may want to consider feeding the little guy Esbilac milk. This powder is highly digestible and offers quality nutrition to pre-weaned squirrel pups. Female squirrels usually nurse their newborns for two weeks, at which point they triple in size and start to have hair on their naked bodies. It can be a little messy, so be sure to wipe off the soaked bread and dry it well afterward.
When using Esbilac, be sure to mix the powder thoroughly with warm water. Don’t use a blender – this could make the formula too thick. Store the powder in the refrigerator. One can makes up to 60 oz. (1800mL) of liquid. One can contains approximately 794g of powder. For one can, you can use two or three tablespoons of powder.
Coconut milk
It is advisable to avoid letting the baby squirrel out of the nest if the mother has not come back to feed it within thirty minutes. Also, if there are any dangerous animals nearby, it is best to keep the baby squirrel inside during the night. This way, the baby will not get chilled or overheated. However, you must be very careful while feeding the baby squirrel because you don’t want to kill it!
It’s recommended that you start feeding the squirrels at least two weeks old. After that, you can introduce solid foods such as Squirrel Complete, a product that combines healthy nuts and high-protein pellets. Always feed your baby squirrel using a stainless steel cup, glass water bottle, or ceramic feeding dish, which are both lead-free and dishwasher safe. If you are worried about the squirrel swallowing plastic or glass, make sure the bottle is dishwasher-safe.
Almond milk
When feeding a baby squirrel, it is best to start off by rehydrating it. Baby squirrels have already been separated from their Mother and are more prone to dehydration. A bottle of almond milk or eyedropper will work just as well. But you should avoid feeding your squirrel by placing the dropper on its tongue or lips. The flow of milk or eyedropper may be too large and cause the baby to aspirate the liquid.
If you can’t catch the baby squirrel on its own, you can try to release it outside. If you’re lucky, the squirrel will arrive at your back door before you do. It may seem like it’s begging to come in, but that’s just because it’s unfamiliar with the area. Squirrels have their own home ranges, so placing them in new places can make them feel uncomfortable.
