What Size Hole Can a Squirrel Get Through?
A quarter-sized hole is more than enough for a red squirrel to squeeze through, but it is possible for a ground squirrel to fit through a larger one. This is because ground squirrels live in colonial burrow systems. In fact, it is possible for a red squirrel to fit through a hole the size of a quarter and have the entire body fit through. But how exactly do squirrels get through such small gaps? Here are some of the ways they manage to squeeze through tight spots.

Red squirrels and grey squirrels can get through a hole as small as a quarter
Both red and gray animals can squeeze through a hole a quarter-size. Despite the fact that they are half the size of a cat, these animals can fit through holes of just a quarter-inch wide. Unlike cats, who can squeeze through an opening three inches wide, red and grey squirrels use multiple hideouts. However, they are almost always smaller than cats.
Red squirrels are smaller tree-squirrels. They are almost half the size of grey squirrels and have a bushy tail that extends almost the entire length of their body. Their fur is reddish in color with white undersides. Both male and female red squirrels are roughly equal in size. They live primarily in northern parts of the United States and parts of Canada, extending south into the Appalachian Mountains and southern New Mexico.
California ground squirrels live in colonial burrow systems
California ground squirrels live in burrow systems. They can have six to twenty entrances. The burrows of ground squirrels are up to seventy-one feet long, with the deepest tunnel measuring approximately 28 feet below the ground. Burrow systems typically consist of multiple generations. California ground squirrels live close to their mothers, but males can travel as much as a mile away to join other squirrel colonies.
The onset of breeding season varies, depending on climate and latitude. In warm climates, mating may begin in December, while breeding in cooler areas takes place in January. Mating season peaks from March to June. California ground squirrels breed only once a year. After giving birth, females move their babies several times to avoid predators. Newborn babies are born in a burrow and are weaned around six months.
Red squirrels cannot chew steel
Despite the name, red squirrels cannot chew steel. Unlike other rodents, they cannot gnaw through steel. Some types of steel are too hard for them to chew. However, stainless steel and galvanized steel are soft enough that they can’t chew through them. Stainless steel and chicken wire mesh are great choices for fences and gates. But you must be very careful about the type of metal you choose for your home.
For example, if your roof is made of wood, you can use chicken wire as a barrier. You can either install it in your yard or inside your home. While cheaper versions are often made of aluminium, stronger galvanized steel is the best choice. You should be aware that even though they look cute and harmless, squirrels can be aggressive and territorial if they find a way into your home or yard. It is therefore important to keep a watchful eye on your roof, siding, and windows.
Sealing up entry points before squirrels find them
Sealing up entry points before squirrels find your home is a key to keeping rodents out. They can squeeze through very small holes, so make sure all your doors and windows are properly fitted with screens. Also, place wire mesh over open vents and chimney tops. Hire a pest control professional to recommend ways to seal your home’s defense. If you suspect squirrels are already in your home, block one entry point only.
Another common entry point is around your garage. Most people treat the garage as an airlock, but it’s an important entrance for many pests. You can keep the baby squirrels safe from the mother by repairing entrances before they arrive. If you’re not sure whether to do this yourself, call a Wildlife Management Services to make sure you’re not leaving an opening open for an animal. If you’ve noticed any signs of rodents in your garage, seal them off immediately!
No repellents for squirrels
If your outdoor planter has been dug by a squirrel, you’re probably wondering how to get rid of it. A simple trick is to use garlic, which squirrels dislike because of its strong smell. Place a few cloves in the hole to repel the squirrels, but keep in mind that garlic smells bad. You can also sprinkle crushed garlic around the hole so it’s visible from a distance. It may take a couple of days before the smell will go away.
Electronic squirrel repellents may be a solution, but they may aggravate the animal. Instead of relying on sound, you can try using an ultrasonic device. The T3-R emits varying frequencies of sound in a wide range of wavelengths. These devices are weatherproof, so they can be placed outdoors, as well as indoors. They also work well in garages, attics, and outbuildings.
