Snakes
Snakes are venomous animals that are poisonous to squirrels and can kill them in a matter of seconds. Infrared radiation from a snake’s bite can signal a squirrel’s imminent death, and it is not uncommon for them to attack a squirrel in response. Rat snakes, on the other hand, are not normally known as squirrel-eating lizards and usually feed on other frogs and mice. While snakes are known to attack squirrels of all ages and sizes, they prefer young ground squirrels.
The video was taken in the Sonoran desert of Arizona and southern Nevada, but the footage of the squirrel clenching the lizard has gone viral. The squirrel has been compared to something out of ‘The Walking Dead’; some have even said that it looks like it came straight out of the show! However, despite the cuteness, this footage should not be taken lightly!
Dogs
Many people think that squirrels aren’t good for our health, but that’s simply not true. Many dogs are capable of scavenging and eating a squirrel’s leftovers. Besides being cute, squirrels are part of the animal kingdom, so many pet owners are tempted to keep a squirrel feeder near the home. But the question remains: why are dogs chomping on the flesh of a hapless squirrel?
Prairie dogs are incredibly social and have been found to ruthlessly kill ground squirrels in Wyoming. Their offspring outlive their parents and often outlive them. And the killer prairie dogs don’t actually eat the squirrels they kill; instead, they gnaw on the brain and chest to make their own food. Then they abandon the carcass to nearby birds to scavenge.
Peregrine falcons
The food pyramid of peregrine falcons shows that the majority of their diets consist of small to medium-sized mammals. These animals include pigeons, blackbirds, jays, and starlings. In addition, they also eat ground squirrels, mice, and insects. These creatures are also found in eastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico. Here are some of the main ingredients in their diets:
Peregrine falcons live in riparian forests in North America, but they can also be found in coastal sandhills and old-growth conifer forests. They are often spotted above dense forest canopies, but the species is also known to inhabit open spaces and savannas. In the southern United States, peregrine falcons live in sandshinnery oak communities and breeding areas.
Rock squirrels
The rock squirrel is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae. They are native to southwestern United States, from southern Nevada and Utah to Colorado, Western Texas, and the panhandle of Oklahoma. They are sometimes considered pests by humans. In many instances, the species will display anti-predator behaviors, such as making menacing movements near snakes and throwing rocks or other debris at predators. They also often rest in high places, emit a musky scent when disturbed, and communicate their presence to other squirrels.
Male rock squirrels mate with more than one female during the breeding season, which is from April to June. The female gives birth to two to eight kits a year. The young remain in the mother’s burrow for two to three months and start foraging for food after three days. Newborn rock squirrels stay in the mother’s territory for up to 14 weeks, and the babies often use the same burrow. They are protected by their mothers until they reach adulthood, but they usually do not travel more than 2 miles.
