The young will stay with the mother until it is fully grown, and they may move back to the mother’s drey after several months. It’s important for parents to watch the baby squirrel’s development to ensure it grows up to be a healthy and strong adult.

Survival skills
Before you approach a mother squirrel and let her baby out, consider your survival skills. It may take several days to let out the baby. However, you must wait two to three weeks before trapping it. The reason for this is that baby squirrels have a limited sense of hearing, sight, smell, chewing, and fur. As they are small and hard to spot, they can easily become confused and get lost in your home.
First, keep the baby warm. Keep the baby warm by gently cradling the baby squirrel in your hand. This is vital for the infant squirrel. If the baby squirrel is very cold, do not feed it until it warms up. If it is too cold to feed it, place it next to you. You can also use a heating pad to provide warmth to the baby squirrel. If you are worried that the baby squirrel will suffer from cold, you can also use warm water. Make sure that the water does not get too hot and that you check on the baby squirrel frequently to make sure it is comfortable.
Abandonment
When a mother squirrel lets out the baby, you need to be prepared for this. It may not happen right away, so be patient and wait until it gets dark. In the meantime, keep a video of the crying baby on your cell phone and play it in a nearby tree. If the mother squirrel doesn’t come back, you may want to leave the nest overnight. If the baby squirrel is still in the box, you can play a distress call on your cell phone. Be sure to play it only once a day, though.
