Prairie Bayou WMA is part of the Grand Prairie ecosystem
Prairie Bayou Wildlife Management Area is a 453-acre tract in southeastern Lonoke County, Arkansas. This WMA was acquired by the Farmers Home Administration program in 1994. It is part of the Grand Prairie ecosystem. The WMA is accessible only by foot. Take Raborn Road east of Arkansas Highway 70 to reach the entrance. Once there, you will find parking at the east end of the WMA.
There are numerous water control structures on the land. In addition to extensive levees, there are seventy-three gates-on-top-of-the-ground pipes, four re-lift pumps, and two high-water rock spillways. The WMA also has waterfowl rest areas where ducks can rest from hunting. A long history of human intervention in the Grand Prairie ecosystem has led to its protection.
Roth Prairie Natural Area is a remnant of tallgrass prairie that was once used for hay production. Here, you’ll find species of big bluestem, Indiangrass, and a variety of other grasses. Prairie mounds can reach three feet in height and are evidence that the prairie was not plowed or leveled. This remnant tallgrass prairie is the last of its kind in eastern Arkansas. Before settlement, this region contained about three hundred thousand acres of prairie.
