Gray squirrels live in nests
Grey squirrels build dreys, or nests, that look like piles of loose leaves. They are actually three layers thick, weighing from six to seven pounds. The outer layer is made of leaves, while the inner layer is woven bark and fluffy stuff. The entrance to the drey is located at the bottom, on the side opposite the prevailing wind. This location is ideal because the babies in a drey are less protected by a branch than they would be in a tree hole.
Gray squirrels are not completely gray, however. In winter, their fur becomes more pronounced and their tails are whitish, creating the appearance of gray. They have buffy brown or white underparts, and their ears are tan or cinnamon. Their tails are long and bushy, measuring about eighteen to twenty-five centimeters (four to ten inches) long.
Fox squirrels prefer open, park-like woods with sparse ground cover
When hunting foxes, it is important to find an area with plenty of food. Fox squirrels are known to spend a considerable amount of time foraging, so it is crucial to identify their preferred food sources. One stand of hickory trees, or a clump of oak trees, is the ideal habitat for foxes, as they attract large numbers of these mammals.
While they are smaller than their gray cousins, they are twice as big. They measure between 20 and 26 inches long, and weigh about two and a half pounds. They live a relatively short life, averaging three or four years, but some individuals can reach as long as twelve years. While the gray squirrel spends most of its time in dense forest, fox squirrels prefer open woods with sparse ground cover.
The color of a fox’s fur is similar to that of a gray fox. It is gray with rusty overcast on the upper body and a lighter orange color on the underside. In the winter, fox squirrels typically live in open, park-like woods with sparse ground cover. They are not as aggressive as gray squirrels are, and they rarely show any bully behavior. The gray squirrel is the dominant species, and gray squirrels tend to ignore fox squirrels.
Getting a license to hunt squirrels
