Identifying a squirrel’s habitat

You can identify their habitat by their noises, which include gnawing, scratching, and pattering. You can also spot their nests by finding balls of cardboard or insulation. During the rut, they spend most of their time in treetops, where they can enjoy the elements. If you happen to encounter one, wait until the weather turns over slightly or starts to drizzle. In either case, it’s important to note that the nest box is made of cedar, not lumber treated with decay-prevention materials. The box should be affixed to a healthy, non-cavity tree, at least 18 feet from the ground. Grey squirrels, on the other hand, prefer to use a nest box in a tree that’s on the east or south side.
Trapping a squirrel
The first tip for trapping a squirrel is to wait for a little rain. Although squirrels spend most of the year in treetops, they tend to use the rain and elements for protection. If it’s raining, wait until it’s a slight drizzle before you go in to catch the squirrel. You’ll be able to spot the squirrel much easier. Then, you can use a heavy rope to lure it out of the chimney or tree. The end of the rope should be dropped so the animal does not climb onto the roof.
You can also look for nests in the area. Squirrels usually use nests of different sizes and types. If the nest is small and flat, it’s most likely that the squirrel has abandoned it. This is a good sign because squirrels will not use a nest if it’s falling apart. Also, if you see fresh cuttings of nuts on a log or stump, you may have caught a squirrel in the act.
