Is One Sex a Better Hunter Than the Other?
There’s no hard and fast rule about sex and hunting ability. While some people have their personal preferences, hunting ability is unrelated to sex. Nonetheless, differences in size, heat cycles, marking and temperaments between the sexes can lead to a preference. This article will explore some of these differences and why they are so common in the different dog breeds.
Beagle
There are many benefits of having a beagle in your household. For one, this breed is a natural hunter and naturally acquires hunting instincts. This trait allows a beagle to learn the best hiding places of rabbits and squirrels. This trait will come in handy during the winter when the ground is covered in snow and the dogs become overzealous in their pursuit of food.
The Beagle’s ancestry can be traced back to the 16th century, where the dog was used to hunt rabbits and other small game. In 1885, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed. Today, the Department of Agriculture has Beagles working as detection dogs and for food safety. Even President Lyndon B. Johnson once had a Beagle in the White House!
Mountain Cur
The modern Mountain-Cur, also known as the Original Mountain Cur, is an excellent hunter and a real people dog. Ask anyone who owns one and they will likely tell you that their new dog bonds with them very quickly. In addition to their great hunting ability, the Cur will do just about anything for their owner. As long as their owner is happy, they will be happy.
The Mountain-Cur is a superior scent-hunter than many other types of dogs. The dog’s olfactory system is extremely sensitive to colder scents. In fact, it is one of the main reasons that hunters choose this breed. The dog is also very intelligent and obedient, which is something that most hunting dogs don’t possess. However, training your dog to hunt will help you get the most out of your Mountain-Cur.
West Siberian Laika
If you’ve ever wondered whether a West Siberian Laika is a superior squirrel dog, then look no further than this article. The name, “laika”, is derived from the Russian verb “laiat.” However, it doesn’t mean that a Laika should constantly bark when searching for its quarry, as its name suggests. Instead, the Laika should be silent and persistent when it comes to stalking a squirrel or black grouse.
The West Siberian Laika is a highly intelligent dog with a good sense of direction. A good hunter will be able to detect a squirrel from a distance, and a West Siberian Laika will bark to alert you to his approach. The Laika has an entire set of white teeth, which meet in a scissors bite. Its dark ears are set high and slant slightly.
Airedale Terrier
If you’re wondering if the Airedale Terrier is a better hunting dog for squirrels, you’re not alone. Many Airedale owners aren’t into hunting or working their dogs every day in the field. That’s not to say that Airedales don’t need a bit of work, but their grit and intelligence should help them thrive in a family setting.
The Airedale Terrier is among the largest Terriers available, and it was first bred for its ability to hunt rodents and other animals. It was primarily bred in the 1800s to hunt rats and otters. Over time, the breed developed a prey drive for small mammals and birds. Despite its large size, the Airedale Terrier is not a good hunting dog for squirrels, but it is a great companion for a family with children and other animals.
Cur
Is it possible to train a dog to hunt squirrels? In the case of Champ and Curly, the answer is yes. Champ and Curly are just two-year-old treeing feists that were originally owned by Dunkley’s father. Dunkley breeds these dogs and is the president of the N.C. Taxidermy Association. He has two dogs and they are in the learning process of becoming better hunters.
Squirrel hunting is not limited to just the suburbs anymore. Hunting for squirrels is widespread and virtually free. As a result, hunting squirrels can be both challenging and rewarding. And if you’re lucky, you can catch a squirrel or two! But, of course, this is not an easy task. Luckily, the TWRA Wildlife Management Areas have ample opportunities for hunting squirrels.
