In Bhutan, it shares its habitat with the red fox, musk, Tibetan snowcock, and snow leopard.

During a recent mammal survey in Jigme Dorji National Park, scientists captured a woolly flying squirrel in a camera trap. The new species was originally believed to be extinct for 70 years, but scientists have since confirmed that the animals are now present in Bhutan.

Researchers have found some possible locations where they can still live, including high-altitude areas in India and Bhutan. In addition to Mount Gaoligong in China, this animal can be found in the Biluo Snow Mountain area of Tibet, as well as in alpine areas of juniper scrub. This animal is also found in south-eastern Tibet and east of the River Brahmaputra. Further east, in the western Himalayas, it has been caught at heights of over four thousand meters.

Its unique anatomy and gliding ability make it difficult for other squirrels to catch. Pakistan’s Wildlife Conservation Society has recently launched a conservation project in the Northern Areas, focusing on protecting the high mountain pine forest ecosystem where it thrives. Listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List, the woolly flying squirrel’s habitat is in a threatened state.
The population of the woolly flying squirrel in Pakistan is estimated at between 1,000 and three thousand individuals. The primary threats to the species include habitat degradation and deforestation. IUCN estimates that this species could decline by as much as 20% over five years. Despite these threats, deforestation has been curtailed in the Gilgit-Baltistan region in recent years through community-based conservation initiatives. The Parks and Wildlife Department and the Wildlife Conservation and Social Development Organization Napura-Basin provided support to the rescue and mapping operations. The woolly flying squirrel is unique in its adaptations and coexists with the Kashmir Gliding Squirrel and the Red Giant Gliding Squirrel in northern Pakistan. The species coexists with these two squirrel species in the same habitat, but there are a few differences in their distribution. Zahler & Wood (1997) described its core distribution range in Pakistan as encompassing the Gilgit and Diamer districts in Gilgit-Baltistan.
