Woodland areas favor squirrels
Red and golden-mantled ground squirrels have a positive relationship with bare ground, and the negative response to the beetle has been linked to their aversion to dense vegetation at ground level. Make sure to use your ears rather than your eyes – squirrels often produce distinctive noises such as scratching, chattering, and other sounds. Wearing camouflaged hunting pants or vest is a good choice for this method. If you’re pursuing a squirrel, you’ll need to be very careful not to break any sticks or branches that could cut the squirrel’s leg.
If you prefer to be more hands-off, passive hunting can be equally effective for bagging squirrels in Colorado. Big Rivers WMA in Illinois, for example, is home to some of the most prolific squirrel hunting in the region. Although the terrain is rugged, it’s easy to get away from other hunters, and the trails are easily accessed. In contrast, some areas are quite steep, so be prepared for a challenging hike.
Gray squirrels are quicker than fox squirrels

In open stands, their lateral roots may reach 46 m (150 ft), while their crown width is only one-fifth of this distance. However, the main mass of the tree’s roots is concentrated in the top sixty centimeters (24 in) of soil.
