Who owns Squirrel Nut Zippers? The Squirrel Nut Zipper is a candy that originated in Vermont in the early 20th century. Its name was inspired by the illicit drink Nut Zipper, which was a popular choice among prohibitionists. In the late 1920s, the Squirrel Nut Zipper company moved from Vermont to Texas and then returned to its roots in McKinney, Texas. Today, the company manufactures and sells the taffy in their own factory, which is located in McKinney, Texas.
The original Squirrel Nut Zipper was introduced to the market by an Amish confectionery in Deleware. It was sold in small packages of about three dozen and was named for the prohibition-era cocktail of the same name. Until its recent transition to peanuts, the company was owned by Necco, which ceased production in 2002. Squirrel Brand Company continues to produce artisanal nuts and has a number of other popular products.

In 1992, Mathus and Whalen decided to include friends in their unofficial jam sessions. Ken Mosher, who had worked with them in Metal Flake Mother, joined the group. Later that summer, Don Raleigh, a biomedical engineer, joined the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Raleigh had been a member of the band Loose Lunatics before. He had his own band before joining Squirrel Nut Zippers, and was well-liked by local critics.

In the first year of their revival, the group sold more than three million albums, and they recently released their seventh studio album, Lost Songs of Doc Souchon.
