Why Does a Squirrel Cover Its Head With Its Tail?
If you’ve ever wondered why a squirrel covers its head with its tail, you’re not alone. We get the same treatment from squirrels, too. Mother squirrels give their lives to protect their kits, buying them time to get out of danger. Male squirrels also participate in mating rituals to attract females. Learn why they do it, and get some great tips for how to understand your squirrel!

Communication
California ground squirrels respond to predators such as rattlesnakes and gopher snakes by extending their bouts of inspection, flagging their tail, and turning away from them. When the predator is not present, the tail flagging stops. This behavior has evolved to deter snakes, which they encounter in their habitats. However, there is no evidence to support the concept that squirrels use this behavior to communicate with each other.
The purpose of tail flagging is not clear. It may be a defense mechanism against snakes, but tail flagging may also serve another function. It increases the animal’s conspicuity to predators. The cost of tail flagging could be prohibitive for some species, so some scientists are not certain about its role in communication between squirrels. Nonetheless, these findings indicate that tail flagging could be a useful tool for identifying and avoiding predators.
Defense
Researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior describe a typical encounter between a female grey squirrel and an intruder. At the start of the encounter, the animal stands on its hind feet, with paws against its chest and tail swung over its back. It may even startle the intruder by raising its ears and tail vertically. While the attack may be brief, the startling effect of the squeak is enough to make the animal react defensively.
When the squirrels acted against a simulated rattlesnake, they were the most likely to tail flag and initiate fast body displacement. In other words, when they no longer saw the snake, they were most likely to flag their tails. This behavior, however, was associated with the perception of the snake as present and thus could serve a dual function. The latter may be used to alert predators to the squirrel’s presence, while the former may serve as a vigilance advertisement.
Body language
Despite the fact that the tail of a squirrel is mostly used for balance and protection, it has other uses. A recent study looked at the behavior of squirrels while they were learning to open boxes that contained walnuts or dried corn kernels. Researchers then videotaped the squirrels and watched how their tails changed shape when they found the boxes. Their tails were different from the typical twitching, which suggests that they might be using this tail as a warning to other squirrels that they should be careful.
When a squirrel is threatened, it will flick its tail as a warning to other animals. Unlike other mammals, squirrels don’t usually panic when meeting a predator. They use this signal to alert other squirrels that a predator is nearby. The action of flicking their tail is a kind of body language called sentinels. When a squirrel feels threatened, the tail flick signals to its other squirrels that they should be cautious, since the predator is coming from above.
Nesting
A squirrel covers its head with its tail when nesting. The reason for this behavior is not fully understood. It is possible that the behavior is controlled by individual preferences. Researchers have observed that the behavior does not occur in breeding season, or if empty dreys are available nearby. However, it is possible to observe the behavior in both summer and winter. Here are some possible reasons why squirrels cover their heads with their tails when nesting.
Ground squirrels live in trees, and in their burrows they sometimes build nests. Nests are made of leaves, twigs, and moss, and sometimes even paper. The nest is lined with soft grass and leaves, and the babies are protected inside. Penn State University has produced a PSA about squirrels that features an adorable video of a squirrel in a birthday hat.
